Monday July 4th, 2011 was an extremely long but wonderful day. Marco and I got up at a fairly decent hour to go watch the 4th of July parade. It was another very warm day, but we ended up sticking it out and found a spot in front of the National Archives to watch the parade. It was amazing to see so many floats and huge balloons like we normally see on TV. There were a lot of different entries from all over the nation and we even saw one from San Francisco!
After the parade, we wanted to escape the heat, so I used the power of the badge! We went to the National Museum of American History (my work!) and I took the backpack so that we could get in the museum faster. I brought my badge with me so I could enter the exit and they didn’t have to search through the bag! So Marco was able to go quicker through security instead of waiting in the “check bag” line. So clever =) It was so much cooler in the museum! We decided to eat lunch in the cafeteria, where the power of the badge came in handy again! It was pretty crowded in the cafĂ©, but the staff has a separate line, so we were able to pay pretty quickly, and with my staff discount, we saved about $10! We didn’t get very much for our expensive lunch, but at least we got a discount.
After lunch, we went over to the Natural History museum and spent some time over there. It was great! We were able to see a lot of animals as well as the Hope Diamond. I had been before, but I was able to see a lot more this time and of course it was different going with Marco.
We then were on a search for a blanket so that we could sit on the mall and watch the fireworks. We went over to Air and Space, but had no luck; although we did see a replica of the enterprise:
We settled for buying ponchos which we then took over to the mall and sat on. We waited about 2 hours for the fireworks; during that time it started raining here and there and we were scared they would cancel the show. But they didn’t! We were able to watch the fireworks shoot off behind the Washington Monument. They were wonderful, but it was different than I expected. I guess I have been to Disneyland too many times because the whole time I was wondering “where is the music to go along with it?” There wasn’t even an announcement introducing the show or anything. It just sort of happened and ended. So although the fireworks were gorgeous, I think it was definitely a once in a lifetime thing to do. It was incredibly hot and humid and it rained off and on. By the time the fireworks ended, Marco and I had to climb the hill back to my place. We’ve heard horror stories about the metro during the holiday so we steered clear of it, which means literally we walked the whole day!
Covering all of our stuff from the rain!

"Baby, you're a firework!"
